Build your pattern

Every modifier moves from one note to the next. Repeat the modifiers until the next note would leave the range.

How modifiers work

Modifiers connect notesThe starting note sounds once. Each modifier moves to and sounds the next note. +1 +1 +1 −2 produces 1 2 3 4 2 3 4 5 3 4 5 6… in major. The last 2 is already the starting point for the next +1; it is not played twice. A 0 modifier deliberately repeats a note.

The range determines the cycleModifiers repeat until the next note would leave the range. Skip that note and restart the sequence. A pattern that returns to the same pitch and modifier position loops naturally. The default range is two octaves above and below the root. Reverse after counts complete passes through the modifiers, then retraces the notes backward without repeating the turning note. If the range is reached first, the sequence restarts there instead. Set this slider to Off to use only the range. Play sequence backward reverses the completed sequence.

Blocks organize the modifiersBlocks run consecutively without inserting starting notes or pauses. Block repeats repeat the modifiers from the note just reached. Add, remove, duplicate, or reorder blocks; use signed values to ascend or descend.

Diatonic stays in scaleDiatonic moves are scale steps. Chromatic moves are frets / semitones, with optional scale constraint. The range is measured in semitones relative to the root. Changing root or octave transposes playback in place, preserving its position and beat timing.

Random variationRandomize once, then slide the amount to vary that result live. Adding or removing blocks is optional; with it off, only move values change. Undo random restores the previous pattern.

Guitar and audioThe fretboard follows the sounding pitches and offers alternate fingerings. Use volume to mix with other audio. Playback keeps time in the background where the browser permits it. Space plays or pauses; Escape stops.
